Gladen introduced the Sigma subwoofers – eight models for wide-ranging use

The German Gladen continues the extensive modernization of its portfolio. After unveiling the subwoofers of the top-tier Zeta model line and the new generation of Sigma speakers, the subwoofers of the eponymous series are now also arriving. They replace the long-popular RS and RS-X models, which were important mainstays of the Gladen brand's lineup. The new generation brings a redesigned construction, more modern materials, more powerful motor systems and, above all, wide-ranging uses from compact SQ installations to powerful bass systems. And because Gladen has prepared as many as eight models this time, there is definitely a lot to choose from.

Two product lines with different approaches

The new Sigma range includes a total of eight subwoofers divided into two separate product lines. The basic SSW models follow the philosophy of the original RS line and emphasize above all a natural sonic character and precise reproduction of the bass band. The more powerful SSWX versions take over the role of the previous RS-X line and push the possibilities of the new generation toward higher power, greater cone excursion and significantly higher acoustic pressure.

It is not only about different power or design. Both series use different cone materials, basket constructions and motor systems that correspond to their specific focus. The common denominator of the entire range, however, is the emphasis on precise cone guidance, high mechanical stability and surprisingly small enclosure volume requirements. We consider the last feature to be one of the most interesting advantages of the new generation. For some models, the recommended volumes are in single liters, which significantly expands their installation possibilities in modern vehicles.

Gladen Sigma SSW:

  • Gladen SSW065 – 6.5" (165 mm), 200 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 2.5 l.
  • Gladen SSW08 – 8" (200 mm), 350 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 4 l.
  • Gladen SSW10 – 10" (250 mm), 450 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 17 l.
  • Gladen SSW12 – 12" (300 mm), 500 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 38 l.

Gladen Sigma SSWX:

  • Gladen SSWX065 – 6.5" (165 mm), 200 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 1.4 l.
  • Gladen SSWX08 – 8" (200 mm), 450 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 4.5 l.
  • Gladen SSWX10 – 10" (250 mm), 700 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 14 l.
  • Gladen SSWX12 – 12" (300 mm), 800 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, enclosure from 20 l.

Gladen Sigma SSW – emphasis on natural sound and control

The basic SSW series is intended primarily for listeners who expect not only sufficient power from a subwoofer, but also speed, accuracy and a natural integration of the bass band into the overall sound. The construction uses a lightweight paper cone, which is among the traditional and proven materials for high-quality reproduction. In combination with a foam surround, an optimized motor system and precise cone guidance, it creates the prerequisites for a dynamic, clean and well-controlled bass performance.

An important part of the construction is also a long-excursion voice coil with an aluminum former, which contributes to more efficient heat dissipation at higher loads. Stable cone guidance is provided by a robust poly-cotton spider, while a solid steel basket ensures the necessary mechanical rigidity of the entire structure.

The SSW models thus represent an interesting choice for high-quality everyday sound as well as more demanding SQ installations, where the subwoofer is primarily meant to naturally complement the front speakers rather than dominate the entire system at all costs. Thanks to the wide selection of sizes and power ratings, it is also possible to choose a solution according to the available space and the desired bass intensity.

Gladen Sigma SSWX – higher power and maximum power handling

The more powerful SSWX series takes the Sigma subwoofer construction to the next level. It is designed for more demanding installations where high acoustic pressure, pronounced dynamics and the ability to operate long-term with high amplifier power are required. Compared to the basic SSW models, it therefore uses more robust motor systems, larger power reserves and design solutions optimized for higher mechanical loads.

One of the main differences is a fiberglass cone, which excels in high stiffness and resistance to deformation at large excursions. A massive die-cast aluminum basket ensures the strength of the entire construction and limits unwanted mechanical resonances. High-performance voice coils with aluminum formers and robust suspension systems also play an important role, ensuring stable cone guidance even under high loads.

For example, the SSWX10 model features a 60 mm voice coil, a linear excursion of ±15 mm and a power rating of 700 W RMS. The flagship SSWX12 offers power handling up to 800 W RMS. However, these are not exclusively subwoofers focused on maximum loudness. Thanks to the emphasis on mechanical precision and cone control, they are also expected to offer quality bass performance in demanding SQL installations, where high power must be combined with corresponding sound quality.

In conclusion

The new generation of Gladen Sigma represents an important refresh of the German manufacturer's lineup. The popular RS and RS-X subwoofers gain successors that bring a more modern construction, broader power options and, above all, a significantly larger selection for various installation requirements. The split into musically oriented SSW and more powerful SSWX also gives the entire offer a clear logic and makes selection easier according to the specific focus of the audio system. Gladen is thus well positioned to build on the success of its predecessors, and we look forward to the first installations.
