The Sigma range from Gladen represents a new generation of subwoofers designed for modern high-performance car audio systems, where precision, power handling and maximum control over the bass band play a key role. The Sigma series combines Gladen's traditional values with the latest technologies and materials aimed at the current demands of modern vehicles and demanding installations. All models use a robust mechanical construction, precisely optimized motor systems and carefully matched parameters to achieve a clean, dynamic and precisely controlled bass performance.

The Sigma subwoofers are further divided into two separate product lines. The SSW models focus on musicality, speed and a natural character of bass reproduction. A typical feature is a lightweight paper cone, valued for its natural sound with excellent response and control. The construction uses a sturdy steel basket and optimized long-excursion motor systems for high efficiency and reproduction accuracy. In contrast, the SSWX series pushes the lineup towards higher power, greater cone excursion and extreme durability. This is achieved by a rigid fiberglass cone, a massive die-cast aluminum basket, more robust motor systems and a construction optimized for higher acoustic pressure.

Subwoofer with precise bass and high control

The Gladen Sigma SSW10 was designed for installations where a pronounced deep bass, high acoustic pressure and at the same time maximum control over reproduction are required. Thanks to the larger 10" cone, a powerful motor system and a long-excursion design, the subwoofer can deliver an authoritative and physically impactful bass performance without loss of precision or musicality. The reproduction character remains fast, clean and very well controlled even at higher volumes, making the SSW10 ideal for dynamic music styles as well as for deep bass passages that require large air displacement and stable power. Optimized parameters also allow use in sealed or bass-reflex enclosures depending on the desired reproduction character.

Paper cone and optimized motor system

The subwoofer uses a lightweight and rigid paper cone that contributes to the natural character of bass reproduction, fast response and very good cone control even under higher load. In combination with a foam surround and a long-excursion 50 mm voice coil, the SSW10 can effectively transfer the amplifier's high power without loss of precision or unwanted distortion. The aluminum voice-coil former helps to effectively dissipate heat during long-term loads, while the robust poly-cotton spider ensures precise cone guidance at high excursion. The stable construction uses a sturdy steel basket and an optimized motor system for maximum efficiency, control and reproduction purity even at high acoustic pressure.

Flexible installation options

The Gladen Sigma range includes a total of eight models designed for various applications from compact SQ systems to powerful SQL installations focused on maximum acoustic pressure. All subwoofers use a Dual 2 Ω configuration, enabling very flexible wiring options and easy adaptation to different amplifier types and system configurations. A strong emphasis during development was also placed on minimizing the required enclosure volume, which is why all models are optimized for very compact installations. The recommended enclosure volume from 17 liters also allows maintaining reasonable installation requirements even in higher-powered systems.

The sensitivity of the subwoofer is given in decibels (dB) and, in simple terms, means that the higher the value, the lower the demands on the power of the amplifier. This is a de facto rating of how a subwoofer converts watts to sound. Sensitivity ratings are in noise level measured at 1 meter from the subwoofer using 1 W (watt of power) or using 2.83 volts at the source at 1 meter.

A higher decibel level means the subwoofer is louder with less power. For every 3 dB increase in sensitivity, the subwoofer requires half the power to reproduce the same volume. For example, if an 88 dB subwoofer needs 300 Watts to produce a certain volume, then a subwoofer with 91 dB sensitivity needs only 150 Watts to reach the same efficiency.

Example:
A 2 Ohm subwoofer cannot be connected to an amplifier that is only stable up to 4 Ohms. A 4 Ohm subwoofer can easily be used on an amplifier that is stable up to 2 Ohms. Connecting a 4 Ohm subwoofer to an amplifier that is stable up to 4 Ohms also without problems. The most common subwoofer impedance is 4 Ohm.

Recommended enclosure volumeThe closed enclosure is characterized by a simple construction. Closed enclosures are usually smaller than bass-reflex enclosures, and a special damping fleece is used for their damping.

A closed baffle has the advantage of preventing an acoustic short between the front and back radiation of the subwoofer diaphragm. The disadvantage is that the closed enclosure raises the natural resonance frequency of the used subwoofer and thereby also increases the lower limit frequency. This is because the back side of the diaphragm is forced to compress and dilute the air inside the enclosure when the subwoofer is radiating in a closed enclosure. This adds to the inherent stiffness of the subwoofer's oscillation system the stiffness of the air in the closed enclosure. This causes an increase in the stiffness of the oscillating system and thus an increase in the resonant frequency of the entire system: subwoofer -> loudspeaker.

The increase in resonant frequency for a given subwoofer is greater, the smaller the volume of air in the closed enclosure. The relatively small volume of air in the closed enclosure acts on the subwoofer as an acoustic spring when radiating the back side of the membrane into the enclosed enclosure.

USE: Mainly for quality bass listening in the entire band with an emphasis on detail and accurate reproduction in the lower band.

Fs - resonant frequencyFs - is the lower resonant frequency. This parameter is the de facto free air resonant frequency of the subwoofer. Simply put, it is the point at which the weight of the subwoofer's moving parts equals the force of the subwoofer's suspension while it is in motion. If you've ever seen a piece of string start to hum uncontrollably in the wind, you've seen the effect of reaching a resonant frequency.

The weight of the moving parts and the stiffness of the suspension (surround and spider) are key elements that affect the resonant frequency. As a general rule, a lower Fs indicates a subwoofer that would be better at reproducing low frequencies than a subwoofer with a higher Fs. However, this is not always the case, as other important parameters of the subwoofer also enter the resulting sound.
