Audison VOCE II Subwoofers – introduction and first impressions

Audison last year, after a long wait, introduced a new generation of VOCE II speakers, about which we recently wrote a detailed review. The new VOCE brought a redesigned construction, more modern technical solutions, a more advanced sonic character and top‑level workmanship. And because the speakers scored highly with us and we now consider them among the best in their category, expectations for the new subwoofers were really high.

Subwoofers that break established compromises

Right from the start we will say that Audison not only met our expectations but in many respects even exceeded them. The new VOCE II subwoofers bring something that is very hard to find nowadays – a combination of minimal installation depth, small enclosure requirements and yet a truly mature sound. And it is precisely in this area that most compact subwoofers usually hit their limits.

Most similarly conceived subwoofers focus primarily on installation practicality, but often at the cost of slower response, worse control or a less precise bass presentation. Performance and the ability to maintain a stable sound character at higher volumes are often problematic as well. Many years ago this was successfully changed by specialists at JL Audio, whose shallow subwoofers offered exceptional power and reproduction quality for their time. However, they were not typical "sound quality" subwoofers in today’s sense, and since then both technologies and listeners’ demands have advanced significantly.

The new VOCE II subwoofers bring something that others have so far failed to achieve and can, without exaggeration, be described as full‑fledged SQ subwoofers. They offer speed, control, precision and musicality that you would normally expect from classic designs with significantly greater installation depth and larger enclosures. At the same time they belong to the most practical subwoofers we have ever had the chance to test and use in our installations. We were also very pleasantly surprised by their ability to play authoritatively and with absolute composure even at higher volumes, where the bass remains tight, defined and excellently controlled. And all this in enclosures starting from an incredible 12 liters. It is precisely this combination that makes the new VOCE II subwoofers such an exceptional product.

Audison VOCE II – available models

The new VOCE II subwoofer range includes four separate subwoofers, specifically a pair of 10" and 12" models that differ mainly in the configuration of the dual voice coil (2 × 2 Ω or 2 × 4 Ω). This makes the subwoofers easy to adapt to different types of amplifiers and the final impedance of the whole system. All VOCE II subwoofers use 550 W RMS power, a new FEM‑optimized motor structure and a design aimed at maximum control of the cone even under high load. A very small installation depth and the ability to work in surprisingly small sealed enclosures are also a matter of course. A durable steel grille is included, so this is a complete package.

And which models are they specifically?

  • Audison AV 10 D2 II – 10" (250 mm) subwoofer, 550 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, sensitivity 83.5 dB, mounting depth 82.6 mm.
  • Audison AV 10 D4 II – 10" (250 mm) subwoofer, 550 W RMS, 2 × 4 Ω, sensitivity 83.5 dB, mounting depth 82.6 mm.
  • Audison AV 12 D2 II – 12" (300 mm) subwoofer, 550 W RMS, 2 × 2 Ω, sensitivity 85 dB, mounting depth 88 mm.
  • Audison AV 12 D4 II – 12" (300 mm) subwoofer, 550 W RMS, 2 × 4 Ω, sensitivity 84.5 dB, mounting depth 88 mm.
A lot of attention is also deserved by the ready‑made AVBX enclosures, which Audison developed in parallel directly with the Voce II drivers so that they would together form an acoustically optimal unit with real use in modern installations, where every liter of space is very precious. The enclosures use a rigid 15 mm MDF construction with internal bracing, the possibility of installation in Down‑Firing or Up‑Firing mode and very compact dimensions suitable even for modern vehicles with limited space. A quality SSP terminal enabling quick and secure connection is of course included. The enclosure design with rounded edges and an attractive aluminum plate with the Audison logo is also very successful. A very elegant alternative to today’s common embroidery and prints by manufacturers.
  • Audison AVBX 10 II – 10" (250 mm) subwoofer in a sealed enclosure, 550 W RMS, 2 × 4 Ω, sensitivity 83.5 dB, dimensions 531 × 361 × 160 mm.
  • Audison AVBX 12 II – 12" (300 mm) subwoofer in a sealed enclosure, 550 W RMS, 2 × 4 Ω, sensitivity 84.5 dB, dimensions 607 × 401 × 175 mm.

What is hidden inside the Voce II subwoofers

Audison's goal was to create subwoofers capable of offering deep and energetic bass while maintaining tonality, speed and mechanical stability even under very high load. The AV 10 II and AV 12 II models were therefore developed completely from scratch using modern materials, extensive FEM simulations and several proprietary technologies. The result is a design focused on maximum cone control, high thermal stability and minimal distortion even under long‑term high loads.

Airflow Venting Cooling (A.V.C.)

One of the most important technologies of the new VOCE II generation is the Airflow Venting Cooling system, a sophisticated internal cooling of the voice coil. Audison designed special ventilation channels optimized via FEM simulations so that air flows directly around the most thermally stressed parts of the driver motor. The result is a significantly more efficient heat dissipation, higher thermal stability and, above all, the ability to maintain a consistent sonic character even under prolonged high load. This is often the biggest problem for compact subwoofers because smaller designs generally have worse conditions for cooling. VOCE II, however, behaves very stably even at higher volumes, without significant compression or loss of control.

Radial Reinforcement Framework (R.R.F.)

Audison also paid great attention to the stiffness of the cone itself. The Radial Reinforcement Framework technology uses a special system of internal radial reinforcements under the cone that significantly increase its mechanical strength at high excursions. As a result, the cone deforms less, better withstands high loads and maintains more accurate motion even during truly dynamic playback. The benefit of this technology is audible especially in bass accuracy, response speed and overall control at higher volumes.

FEM‑optimized magnetic circuit

The entire motor of the VOCE II subwoofers was designed using advanced FEM simulations that allowed very precise optimization of the magnetic flux flow around the voice coil. Audison focused primarily on maximizing cone control, linearity of motion and performance stability across the operating range. The result is a very accurate and clean bass performance with excellent control even at higher excursions, an area where ordinary compact subwoofers often lose precision and confidence.

In conclusion

The new Audison VOCE II subwoofers really pleasantly surprised us after the first installations and tests. Audison has managed to create subwoofers that combine minimal installation depth and small space requirements with a sound that matches the character of classic SQ designs. The combination of speed, control, musicality and high power makes the new VOCE II line some of the most interesting subwoofers we've used in our installations so far. In this price category these subwoofers actually become the number one choice for our installations. The Italians have simply nailed it.
