Aero soundproofing – a solution for electric cars with minimal weight increase

Serial soundproofing has long been very poor in most cars – manufacturers focus primarily on meeting strict standards, keeping weight as low as possible, and, of course, price. As a result, a large amount of noise from tires, chassis, and aerodynamics enters the cabin. It doesn't matter whether it's a combustion engine car or an electric car – in both cases, the factory sound insulation is insufficient. However, with electric cars, the weight of additional insulation can be a problem. Why we introduced lightweight soundproofing

The general public often believes that electric cars are quiet cars. However, this is a misconception. The only difference compared to conventional cars is the absence of a combustion engine, which means that the noise of the running engine is eliminated. Paradoxically, however, this is the last thing that bothers most customers. The biggest sources of discomfort are usually rolling noise from the tires and aerodynamic noise, which easily penetrates the thin body panels – and this is practically the same for both types of cars. 

However, this shortcoming is even more noticeable in electric cars. Car manufacturers try not to increase the weight unnecessarily, and the quiet drive also accentuates ambient noise. However, weight plays a crucial role in electric cars. Drivers usually don't worry about it on short trips, but on longer journeys, every extra kilogram can reduce the range. The situation is similar with sports cars, where higher weight affects driving dynamics. Nevertheless, the vast majority of our customers are not concerned about weight – they consider an increase of 70 to 90 kg to be an acceptable and logical trade-off for a quiet and comfortable interior.

However, we wanted to offer a solution for those customers for whom weight plays a crucial role. It doesn't necessarily have to be an electric car or a sports car – the reasons can vary. The important thing is that there is a requirement for the lowest possible weight, but without a significant reduction in efficiency or soundproofing. And thanks to the new generation of Comfortmat materials in the Aerospace series, we have found a way to meet this requirement.

Traditional car soundproofing works on a tried-and-tested two-layer principle. First, an anti-vibration material is applied to the sheet metal to eliminate vibrations and resonance in the bodywork. This is then covered with a layer of sound insulation that dampens airborne noise. This system is highly effective, but it also means greater weight, thickness, and more difficult installation.

Comfortmat Aerospace materials bring a revolutionary change because they combine anti-vibration and sound insulation in a single layer. Their unique structure uses a vibroacoustic matrix with foamed elastic granules that disperse vibrations across a wide frequency spectrum while improving noise insulation, including low frequencies. Selected models are complemented by an elastic membrane that increases airborne noise attenuation.

The result? Weight savings of up to 40% compared to traditional two-layer solutions, while still providing significant effectiveness, even reaching the level of top-of-the-line materials in some important parameters. However, Aerospace materials do not replace conventional soundproofing, which is simply irreplaceable in terms of effectiveness. Aerospace, however, represents an alternative for modern cars, where every kilogram counts, while maintaining excellent soundproofing results.

So what does our new Aero soundproofing package offer?

Aero soundproofing is our new solution, but it differs fundamentally from all others. It uses new Comfortmat Aerospace vibroacoustic materials, which are applied in a single layer. We maintain the range of soundproofing in all key areas of the body – specifically, we soundproof the floor, luggage compartment, interior wheel arches, and all doors. We omit the hood, which is not beneficial in electric cars. Compared to traditional packages, however, Aero allows for significantly lower material weight, shorter installation time, and therefore a more favorable price. The average weight of the materials ranges from 35 to 40 kg, or around 45 kg for the improved Aero Plus package. Aero soundproofing is therefore the solution for those who want to save a significant amount of weight while maintaining above-standard efficiency. Installation time is usually one day, and the price starts at CZK 29,990 including VAT and corresponds to medium-sized cars.
