Volkswagen Arteon - soundproofing of the stylish car from Wolfsburg

The Volkswagen Arteon is one of the most attractive models from the Wolfsburg manufacturer. Its elegant silhouette, precise interior finish and broad range of equipment make the Arteon an ideal choice for drivers seeking a compromise between a sporty fastback and a comfortable touring car. Despite its premium ambitions, however, it suffers from the same flaw as the vast majority of group cars – weak factory sound insulation. The bodywork without any factory anti-vibration treatment suffers from resonances that are most pronounced from the wheels, the floor and the rear of the car. As a result, significant aerodynamic and rolling noise enters the cabin, reducing passenger comfort especially when driving on the highway and over uneven surfaces.

As part of the Expert package, our most comprehensive soundproofing program, we focused on all key areas of the car. We used top-of-the-line materials from the Comfortmat Premium and Expert ranges, which combine extremely effective anti-vibration layers with advanced sound-insulating membrane materials to reduce airborne noise. In the noisiest areas, such as the floor and wheel arches, experience and the correct choice of material are crucial. That is why we apply a 4 mm thick anti-vibration material and a sound-insulating membrane material capable of reducing noise by up to 36 dB. Highly effective materials are also applied to other parts of the body. We soundproofed the front and rear doors, the entire floor including the rear section, the trunk, the roof, the dashboard and the front wheel arches from the interior side.

Four of our technicians worked on the installation and the whole process took one working day. The result is a noticeably quieter cabin and, above all, a comfortable ride that matches the premium ambitions of this model. According to our previous in-house noise measurements on cars of this class using Comfortmat materials, we achieved an average interior noise reduction of 3.5 to 4 dB, which represents more than a twofold decrease in noise compared to the factory sound insulation. And that makes a big difference to comfort in the cabin.
