As part of our series celebrating Ahifi's 20th anniversary, we promised to gradually introduce the most important brands that have influenced our history and helped shape what Ahifi is today. We started with Dodo Juice car cosmetics, and today we conclude this part of the series with perhaps the most significant name of all – Bilt Hamber. A British brand that doesn't look flashy at first glance, doesn't rely on attractive packaging or Instagram glitz, and yet has long been one of the most sought-after and respected manufacturers of car care products on the market.
Bilt Hamber Laboratories: from industrial chemistry to detailing
Behind the brand is Peter Hugh Hamber, who remains its key figure and managing director to this day. Bilt Hamber Laboratories Ltd has been officially operating since 2007, but the idea itself originated earlier, in the mid-2000s. At that time, it was not yet a classic detailing company as we know it today. Bilt Hamber's roots are in surface protection chemistry for demanding conditions, including areas such as the marine and aviation industries. It was from this experience that the logical idea arose: why not transfer the same technology and testing-based approach to the automotive world?
It is no coincidence that the brand's first strong domain was anti-corrosion and protective products. Car detailing cosmetics came later, but from the very beginning with the typical "bilt hamber" signature: a narrow portfolio, emphasis on function and performance, and a minimum of marketing hype. From around the second half of the 2000s, the brand began to make a name for itself among UK detailers, thanks in part to repeated successes in tests and reviews. And even though Bilt Hamber now has distributors all over the world, it still operates as an honest "family" business that keeps its feet on the ground and prefers to fine-tune one product to perfection rather than churning out dozens of new products every year.
Together since 2017: Bilt Hamber and Ahifi
For us at Ahifi, Bilt Hamber has been more than just another brand in our portfolio since the very beginning. We became the official importer in 2017, and to this day we consider it one of the key milestones in our history. It is only the second brand we have acquired after Dodo Juice, and it was during this period that car cosmetics at Ahifi began to be based on different values. Bilt Hamber was one of the first brands to show us that customers can appreciate true quality even without external effects. That when a product works, people will recommend it themselves. And that long-term success does not come from discounts, but from trust.
