Steering wheel button control adapter for Subaru

Retain the original steering wheel radio control functions when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Depending on the vehicle equipment, available functions and the software of the newly installed head unit, some functions may be limited or replaced by others. Compare the shown harness connectors with the connectors in your vehicle and ensure they match both technically and visually. Check whether one of the listed OEM head units was originally installed. Before final installation, verify vehicle functionality, system settings and correct operation of the steering wheel controls (SWC).

• Subaru Forester III (SH) (03/2011 -> 03/2013) - factory OEM radio, without OEM navigation and without Harman Kardon amplifier system.
• Subaru Impreza WRX (GH) (02/2008 -> 04/2014) - factory OEM radio, without OEM navigation and without Harman Kardon amplifier system.
• Subaru Outback IV (BM/BR) (09/2009 -> 04/2013) - factory OEM radio, without OEM navigation and without Harman Kardon amplifier system.
• Subaru Outback IV (BM/BR) (04/2013 -> 03/2015) - vehicles without OEM navigation, without Harman Kardon amplifier system.
• Subaru XV I (4G) (03/2012 -> 01/2016) - factory OEM radio, without OEM navigation and without Harman Kardon amplifier system.

CAN Bus information

Connectors and interface:

• Connector: 20‑pin Nissan.
• OEM steering wheel control connection: 3.5 mm jack or spare wire.

Compatibility:

• Vehicles without OEM navigation.
• Vehicles without Harman Kardon amplifier system.
• Vehicles with Harman Kardon amplifier system: +12V amp remote on Pin 9 next to permanent +12V (measure with the OEM head unit); requires an adapter for active ISO->ISO systems.

Settings:

• Set DIP switches according to the aftermarket unit manufacturer (see manual).

Important additional information

• Compatible with aftermarket head units that have an analog input for steering wheel control (e.g., Sony, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, Zenec, etc.).
• For full activation of the adapter, it is necessary to order the connection cable for the specific radio brand.

General installation instructions

Verification before installation:

1. Check all steering wheel control functions and vehicle settings with the original OEM head unit installed.
2. Disconnect the original radio (OEM HU) with power disconnected.
3. Check all interface connections to ensure they are correctly attached, with power disconnected.

Connection and wiring order:

1. Set and verify the hardware configuration of the interface with power disconnected.
2. Verify the configuration of the connection cable to the head unit with power disconnected.
3. Connect the cable to the head unit according to the aftermarket device manual.
4. Connect the remaining wires according to the device manual.
5. Connect the entire installation to the vehicle, connecting the main power last.
6. Perform the software configuration of the interface according to the product description or manual.
7. Configure the aftermarket head unit (steering wheel control, camera, handsfree, antenna power, etc.).
8. Perform a function test of the steering wheel controls and communication with the vehicle.

Changing the interface configuration and HU cable:

• Make all changes with power disconnected.
• After changes, repeat steps 5 through 8 listed above.

If the interface or vehicle system malfunctions:

• Reinstall the original OEM head unit.
• Start the original unit.
• Initiate CAN Bus shutdown.
• Check the hardware configuration of the interface.
• After CAN Bus shutdown, repeat steps 5 and 6 listed above.

When modifying wiring or cabling:

• Wiring and modifications may only be performed by properly trained personnel.
• All changes must be verified regarding manufacturer approval or impact on the vehicle warranty before connection.
• All modifications must be verified by measurement and comparison with the vehicle wiring diagram before connection.
