Helix DSP Ultra S DSP Processor

The name says it all. The new Helix DSP Ultra S is not just another multichannel signal processor. It is a technological milestone that impressively demonstrates Audiotec Fischer’s technical sophistication and expertise in DSP technology.

TwinDSP Performance

Computational power can only be replaced by even more computational power – which is why the DSP ULTRA S is equipped with two of the most powerful 64-bit audio signal processors from Analog Devices. An astonishing 2.4 billion MAC operations per second enable twelve independently processed channels and a host of new sound functions in combination with a high sampling rate of 96 kHz (resulting in an audio bandwidth beyond 40 kHz).

ACO – advanced 32-bit coprocessor platform

High speed not only in the signal path – the particularly fast 32-bit ACO platform takes over all control tasks and ensures a decisive increase in speed, especially for data communication with the DSP PC-Tool software, but also for lightning-fast switching between up to ten possible sound presets. ACO offers much more – amazing sound effects such as Augmented Bass Processing or StageXpander are implemented, as well as a channel-separated input equalizer including an Input Signal Analyzer (ISA) for easy analysis and compensation of OEM radio input signals that already contain factory sound settings.

Even improved sound performance

The Helix DSP Ultra S earns its name not only in terms of functionality but also in sound quality. An extremely complex and newly designed analog input stage ensures phenomenal sonic characteristics with full high-resolution audio bandwidth up to well over 40 kHz. Considerable effort was also invested in filtering unwanted interference in the power supply branches of the individual circuit stages. In addition, only exceptionally low-noise operational amplifiers from TI/Burr-Brown’s legendary OPA series are now used.

Virtual Channel Processing – a new era of signal routing begins

Adapting to modern OEM sound systems through an increasing number of inputs has a significant impact on the complexity of signal routing inside the processor. Especially when several input signals are mixed together and then redistributed to multi-way systems, conventional routing concepts quickly reach their limits in terms of implementation and usability. Audiotec Fischer’s new multi-stage Virtual Channel Processing, combined with the well-known user-friendly DSP PC-Tool software, makes the implementation of even highly complex system configurations much easier. In addition, it allows proprietary FX sound functions such as RealCenter or StageEQ to be assigned arbitrarily.

Comprehensive connectivity

Simple adaptation to existing factory radios or multichannel OEM audio systems is more important than ever, which is why the DSP ULTRA S is equipped not only with the latest-generation ADEP.3 circuit but also offers an especially large input sensitivity range. The huge span of 1–8 volts (RCA) or 4–32 volts (high level) allows combination with almost any conceivable source of analog signal, even with high-output OEM amplifiers.

Intelligent high-level input ADEP.3

Modern factory-installed car radios include sophisticated diagnostic capabilities for connected speakers. In particular, the latest generation of head units is equipped with additional monitoring functions so that when a signal processor is connected, diagnostic error messages and the loss of specific functions (e.g., fader function) can often occur – but not with the DSP Ultra S. The new ADEP.3 circuit (Advanced Diagnostics Error Protection, 3rd Generation) avoids all these problems without unnecessarily loading the outputs of the OEM radio speakers at high volume.

Start-Stop capability

The switched power supply of the HELIX DSP ULTRA S ensures a constant internal supply voltage even if the battery voltage drops to 6 volts during engine cranking.

Power Save Mode

Power Save Mode is part of the standard settings. It allows a significant reduction in power consumption of amplifiers connected to the HELIX DSP ULTRA S once no input signal is present for more than 60 seconds. Please note that in many modern vehicles with CAN or other internal bus systems, the radio may remain “invisibly” powered for up to 45 minutes after locking and leaving the vehicle. Once Power Save Mode is active, the remote output and thus the connected amplifiers are switched off. The HELIX DSP ULTRA S reactivates the remote output within one second if a music signal is present. It is possible to adjust the shutdown time to 60 seconds or completely disable Power Save Mode using the DSP PC-Tool software.

Automatic detection of digital signal

The Helix DSP Ultra S allows signal-controlled switching between the analog inputs and the digital input. As soon as an input signal is detected on the optical input, the signal processor automatically switches to that input. This function can be deactivated in the DSP PC-Tool software. Alternatively, an optional remote control can be used for manual switching between analog and digital inputs.

RealCenter

The RealCenter function is an algorithm developed by Audiotec Fischer that emphasizes musical information present in both the left and right front channels to create a unique center signal. Unlike common approaches that simply sum channels, the intensity of the central signal is also dynamically controlled by the stereo informational content of the left and right channels. It sounds complex, but the effect is stunning: if only the left or right channel contains audio, the center channel will not reproduce that signal. With conventional algorithms the center channel level is typically reduced by only 6 dB (= half the output level). Audiotec Fischer’s RealCenter enables a unique, expanded soundstage for both driver and passenger simultaneously. The disadvantages of a conventional center channel, such as a narrow, intrusive soundstage, are therefore a thing of the past.

Augmented Bass Processing

Audiotec Fischer’s proprietary Augmented Bass Processing technology, consisting of two revolutionary sound functions – Dynamic Bass Enhancement and SubXpander – was specially developed to significantly enhance subwoofer bass reproduction. Dynamic Bass Enhancement cleverly combines maximum deep bass and peak acoustic pressure regardless of music genre or tone controls in the head unit. Depending on the input signal, Dynamic Bass Enhancement extends its low-frequency range and alters the cutoff frequency of the subsonic filter. The result is a noticeably stronger and deeper bass response at low and medium volume levels without the risk of mechanical or electrical overload of the subwoofer at high volume levels. It’s simply fascinating how much bass performance becomes possible. For even lower and “deeper” bass reproduction, SubXpander can be activated additionally. This adds subharmonic tones to the fundamental tones in the 50–100 Hz frequency range.

StageXpander

Depending on the speaker arrangement in the vehicle, the stereo soundstage at the front seats can be more or less wide. A center speaker can further limit the spatial reproduction of music. This is where Audiotec Fischer’s new StageXpander comes in – a sound function that seemingly breaks acoustic limitations and creates a much wider stereo base without negatively affecting the precision of vocal or instrument localization. The effect can be adjusted to personal preference in four steps.

ClarityXpander

Looking for greater transparency and substance in the high-frequency reproduction? With ClarityXpander, Audiotec Fischer now offers the right tool. Correctly set (and therefore optionally adjustable in three steps), this function adds additional harmonics in the upper frequency range – especially useful if the original speakers lack a certain brilliance in the treble. The extra treble boost is available not only for the two front channels but also separately adjustable for the center channel. Even better – the center channel allows automatic and dynamic control so that music with a lot of highs does not fatigue the listener.
