DSP Processor Helix DSP.3S
Helix DSP.3S represents a new definition of the standard for digital signal processors. This continuously refined 8-channel DSP offers numerous detailed improvements. In addition to the mandatory optical digital input, it now provides optimal conditions for connecting high-resolution signal sources with sampling rates up to 192 kHz and an additional coaxial digital input.
Most advanced technology for a perfect high-resolution audio experience
The 64-bit next-generation Sigma350 audio DSP and native high-resolution signal processing at a 96 kHz sampling rate, together with BurrBrown A/D and D/A converters, deliver outstanding sound quality. This makes the DSP.3S perfectly prepared to handle high-resolution audio signals with a bandwidth of more than 40 kHz.
ACO – advanced 32-bit coprocessor platform
The DSP.3S is of course also equipped with its own 32-bit ACO platform. It not only takes over all control tasks ultra-fast, but also enables lightning-fast switching of up to ten different sound presets. ACO offers much more – fantastic sound effects are implemented, such as Augmented Bass Processing or StageXpander, as well as a channel-separated input equalizer including an Input Signal Analyzer (ISA) for easy analysis and compensation of input signals from OEM radios that already include default sound settings.
Practical features for maximum connectivity
Sophisticated DSP.3S functions offer everything needed for easy connection to factory radios or multi-channel OEM sound systems. In addition to the smart high-level input with the ADEP.3 circuit, it also includes an optical and a newly added coaxial digital SPDIF input, an Auto Remote switch and an HEC slot for system expansion such as Bluetooth HD audio streaming and more. But that's not all – a new Smart Control Port (SCP) was implemented during the DSP.3S development. This allows multifunctional connection of add-on products and can even supply their full power. Sampling rate 96 kHz
The Helix DSP.3S enables processing of all signals at a doubled sampling rate of 96 kHz. The audio bandwidth is thus no longer limited to common values such as 22 kHz, but allows an extended frequency response of more than 40 kHz. Doubling the sampling rate requires significantly higher DSP performance, since the time available for arithmetic operations is halved. Only the implementation of the latest generation of DSP chips makes it possible to increase the sampling rate to 96 kHz while adding new functions.
ACO – advanced 32-bit coprocessor
The Helix DSP.3S contains an exceptionally powerful next-generation 32-bit coprocessor for all monitoring and communication tasks, both internal and external. Unlike the predecessor 8-bit generation, this MCU achieves much higher speeds in switching presets and in data communication with our DSP PC-Tool software. Another significant advantage is the integrated native CoProcessor bootloader. It enables software upgrades of all DSP components to adapt the ADEP.3 circuitry controlled by the microcontroller, for example in case of future changes in diagnostic systems of OEM radios or when the device is expanded with further interfaces. In addition, with new flash memory the ACO offers 10 memory slots for sound presets instead of the usual two.
Smart high-level input ADEP.3
Modern factory-installed car radios include sophisticated diagnostic options for connected speakers. Especially the latest generation of radios feature additional monitoring functions, so when a signal processor is connected, error messages and the loss of specific functions (e.g. fader function) can frequently occur — but not with the DSP.3S. The new ADEP.3 (Advanced Diagnostics Error Protection, 3rd Generation) circuit avoids all these issues without unnecessarily stressing the OEM radio speaker outputs at high volume.
Start-Stop capability
The switched power supply of the HELIX DSP.3S ensures a stable internal supply voltage even if the battery voltage during engine cranking drops to 6 volts.
Power save mode
Power save mode is part of the default settings. It allows a significant reduction in the power consumption of amplifiers connected to the HELIX DSP.3S when no input signal is present for more than 60 seconds. Please note that in many modern vehicles with CAN or other internal bus architectures, the radio can remain “invisibly” on for up to 45 minutes after locking and leaving the vehicle. Once Power Save Mode is active, the remote output and thus the connected amplifiers are switched off. The HELIX DSP.3S reactivates the remote output within one second when an audio signal is present. It is possible to adjust the shutdown delay from 60 seconds or to completely deactivate Power Save Mode using the DSP PC-Tool software.
Automatic detection of digital signal
Helix DSP.3S allows signal-driven switching between analog inputs and the digital input. As soon as an input signal is detected on the optical input, the processor automatically switches to this input. This function can be disabled in the DSP PC-Tool software. Alternatively, an optional remote control can be used for manual switching between analog and digital inputs.
RealCenter
The “RealCenter” function is an algorithm developed by Audiotec Fischer that emphasizes musical information present in both the left and right front channels to create a distinct center signal. Unlike common methods that simply sum channels, the intensity of the center signal here is dynamically controlled by the stereo information content of the left and right channels. It sounds complex, but the effect is impressive: if only the left or right channel contains audio information, the center channel will not reproduce it. With conventional algorithms, the center channel level is reduced by only 6 dB (half the perceived loudness). Audiotec Fischer’s “RealCenter” enables a unique, expanded soundstage for both driver and passenger at the same time. The disadvantages of conventional center channels, such as a narrow, artificial soundstage, are thus a thing of the past.
Augmented bass processing
Audiotec Fischer’s proprietary “Augmented Bass Processing,” consisting of two revolutionary sound functions — “Dynamic Bass Enhancement” and “SubXpander” — was specially developed to significantly improve subwoofer bass reproduction. “Dynamic Bass Enhancement” cleverly combines maximum deep bass and maximum acoustic pressure regardless of music style or tone controls in the head unit. Depending on the input signal, Dynamic Bass Enhancement extends the lower frequency range and changes the cutoff frequency of the subsonic filter. The result is considerably stronger and deeper bass response at low and medium volume levels without risk of mechanical or electrical overload of the subwoofer at high volumes. The bass performance that becomes possible is simply fascinating. If you want even lower and “deeper” bass reproduction, “SubXpander” can be activated additionally. This adds subharmonic tones to the fundamental tones in the 50–100 Hz frequency range.
StageXpander
Depending on the speaker arrangement in the vehicle, a more or less wide stereo soundstage can be created in the front seats. A center speaker can further limit the spatial reproduction of the music. This is where Audiotec Fischer’s new “StageXpander” comes in — a sound function that seems to break acoustic constraints and allows you to create a much wider stereo foundation without negatively affecting the accuracy of voice or instrument localization. The effect can be adjusted to personal preference in four stages.
ClarityXpander
Looking for more transparency and substance in treble reproduction? With “ClarityXpander” Audiotec Fischer now offers the right tool. Properly set (and optionally adjustable in three steps), this function adds additional harmonics in the upper frequency range — especially useful if the original speakers lack a certain brilliance in the high end. The extra treble boost is available not only for the two front channels, but also separately adjustable for the center channel. Even better — the center channel allows activation of automatic and dynamic control so that music with a lot of highs does not become tiring to the ear.
