Helix DSP Mini MK2 DSP processor
The smallest signal processor in Helix's range receives a worthy successor with the DSP Mini MK2. Like its predecessor, this compact DSP offers a complete technology package. A powerful 64-bit audio DSP and BurrBrown converters combined with a 96 kHz sampling frequency and high-resolution audio bandwidth beyond 40 kHz deliver exceptional sound quality. The MK2 also excels in measured performance. A higher maximum output voltage of 6 volts, significantly improved signal-to-noise ratio and reduced THD ensure pristine sound. The DSP Mini MK2 is, of course, based on the ACO platform with a 32-bit coprocessor that not only handles all control tasks at incredible speed but also enables proprietary audio effects such as Augmented Bass Processing or RealCenter and, last but not least, channel-separated input EQ including the Input Signal Analyzer (ISA).
Seamless integration and maximum control even in the smallest spaces
Since installation space for audio systems in modern vehicles is increasingly limited, combining components is more complex and places higher demands on connectors and cables. The Smart Control Port (SCP) of the DSP Mini MK2 allows multifunctional accessory connection and now even supplies their full power. A robust snap-in construction guarantees a stable connection and helps prevent connector and cable damage, making compact, space-saving installation concepts easier.
All essentials available in a compact chassis
The feature set clearly shows that the name DSP Mini MK2 refers only to size, because there are absolutely no compromises in terms of functionality. Sampling frequency 96 kHz
The Helix DSP Mini MK2 processes all signals at the doubled sampling frequency of 96 kHz. The audio bandwidth is therefore no longer limited to the usual values such as 22 kHz, but allows an extended frequency response of more than 40 kHz. Doubling the sampling frequency requires significantly more DSP power because the number of arithmetic operations available per sample is halved. Only the implementation of the latest generation of DSP chips enables raising the sampling frequency to 96 kHz while adding new features.
ACO – advanced 32-bit coprocessor
The Helix DSP Mini MK2 includes an exceptionally powerful next-generation 32-bit coprocessor for all monitoring and communication tasks, both internal and external. Unlike the previous 8-bit generation, this MCU achieves much higher speeds for switching settings and data communication with the DSP PC-Tool software. Another major advantage is the integrated native bootloader for the CoProcessor. It allows software updates of all DSP components to adapt the ADEP.3 circuit controlled by the microcontroller, for example in case of future changes in factory radio diagnostic systems or if the device is expanded with additional interfaces. In addition, thanks to new flash memory, the ACO offers 10 memory slots for sound settings instead of the usual two.
Intelligent high-level input ADEP.3
Modern factory-installed car radios include sophisticated diagnostic capabilities for connected speakers. Especially the newest generation of head units features additional monitoring functions, so when a signal processor is connected, error messages or loss of specific functions (e.g., fader) can often occur — but not with the DSP Mini MK2. The new ADEP.3 circuit avoids all these issues without unnecessarily stressing the OE radio’s speaker outputs at high volumes.
Start-Stop capability
The switching power supply of the HELIX DSP MINI MK2 ensures a constant internal supply voltage even if the battery voltage drops to 6 volts during engine cranking.
Power save mode
Power save mode is part of the default settings. It significantly reduces the power consumption of amplifiers connected to the HELIX DSP MINI MK2 when no input signal is present for longer than 60 seconds. Please note that in many modern vehicles with CAN or other internal bus architectures, the radio may remain “invisibly” on for up to 45 minutes even after locking and leaving the vehicle. Once Power Save Mode is active, the remote output — and thus the connected amplifiers — is switched off. The HELIX DSP MINI MK2 reactivates the remote output within one second as soon as an audio signal is present. It is possible to adjust the shutdown delay from the default 60 seconds or to completely deactivate Power Save Mode using the DSP PC-Tool software.
Automatic detection of digital signal
The Helix DSP Mini MK2 allows signal-driven switching between analog inputs and the digital input. As soon as an input signal is detected on the optical input, the processor automatically switches to that input. This function can be disabled in the DSP PC-Tool software. Alternatively, an optional remote control can be used for manual switching between analog and digital inputs.
RealCenter
The RealCenter function is an algorithm developed by Audiotec Fischer that emphasizes musical information present in both the left and right front channels to create a unique center signal. Unlike conventional methods that simply sum channels, the intensity of the center signal is also dynamically controlled by the stereo informational content of the left and right channels. It sounds complex, but the effect is stunning — for example, if only the left or right channel contains audio, the center channel will not reproduce that signal. With common algorithms, the center channel level is typically reduced by only 6 dB (= half the loudness). Audiotec Fischer’s RealCenter enables a unique, expanded soundstage for driver and passenger simultaneously. The drawbacks of conventional center channels, such as a constricted or unnatural soundstage, are therefore a thing of the past.
Augmented Bass Processing
Audiotec Fischer’s proprietary Augmented Bass Processing technology, consisting of two revolutionary audio functions — Dynamic Bass Enhancement and SubXpander — was specially developed to significantly improve subwoofer bass reproduction. Dynamic Bass Enhancement cleverly combines maximum deep bass and high acoustic pressure regardless of music style or tone controls on the head unit. Depending on the input signal, Dynamic Bass Enhancement adjusts the lower frequency range and changes the cutoff frequency of the subsonic filter. The result is noticeably stronger and deeper bass response at low and medium volume levels without risking mechanical or electrical overload of the subwoofer at high volumes. The bass performance that becomes possible is simply fascinating. If you want even lower and “deeper” bass reproduction, SubXpander can be activated additionally. This adds subharmonic tones to the fundamental tones in the 50 to 100 Hz frequency range.
StageXpander
Depending on the speaker arrangement in the vehicle, the stereo soundstage at the front seats may be more or less wide. A center speaker can further limit the perceived space. This is where Audiotec Fischer’s new StageXpander comes in — an audio function that seems to break acoustic limitations. It allows creating a much wider stereo base without negatively affecting the localization accuracy of voices or instruments. The effect can be adjusted to personal preference in four steps.
ClarityXpander
Looking for greater transparency and substance in the high-frequency reproduction? With ClarityXpander, Audiotec Fischer now offers the right tool. When properly set — selectable in three steps — this function adds higher harmonic components in the upper frequency range. This is particularly helpful when the original speakers lack the necessary brilliance in the highs. The extra treble effect is not limited to the front channels — it can also be set separately for the center channel. Furthermore, the center channel offers the option of automatic and dynamic treble control, so even music with abundant sparkling detail will not tire your ears during extended listening.
